SEAFOOD MARKET STUDIOS! Affordable + professionally managed temporary artists studios and creation space available in the East Village
- Posted August 28th, 2010

Calling all Calgary-based emerging and professional artists, non-profit arts organizations, and artist collectives!
Need access to affordable, secure studio, rehearsal or creation space? The Seafood Market is an excellent location for multi-disciplinary rehearsals, visual artists’ studios, festival offices, writers, photographers, graphic designers, film and video artists, and interdisciplinary artists.
Current opportunities: Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and Calgary Arts Development have leased a raw 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse space (ideal for rehearsal use) and a 1,400 s.f. flexible space with plenty of natural light for arts uses in the East Village (630 - 7th Ave. SE). Located adjacent to 14 artist studios already filled, the large format spaces are available at reasonable rates for short- to medium-term licenses. Based on the existing building code standard, this space is not ideal for larger presentations or exhibitions.

F.A.Q.
What’s available?
Large Warehouse Space:
There is a large warehouse space (approx. 10,000 sq. ft.) that can be used by groups of dancers, theatre creators, and musicians for rehearsals (dependent on sound bleed to other spaces in the building) or by visual artists creating large scale or installation work. Based on the column locations, the warehouse space can be divided into three sections or used as a whole and is available for large-scale visual art work, installation and for collectives and groups to use as creation space. Depending on the nature of the project, artists’ requirements, and schedules the warehouse may be used as a collective studio space by multiple groups at once. Studio hours are negotiable with the building manager. The large warehouse space is equipped with:
o Linoleum covered or concrete floors
o 20 ft ceilings (est.) and basic overhead lighting
o Access to a communal sink
o Access to a communal fridge and basic kitchen area
Please note: All spaces are available between the hours of 7:00 am and 11:00 pm. There are NOT medium- or technique-specific facilities like a woodshop, sprung dance floors or theatre lights. Artists must provide their own tools, equipment and furniture; some restrictions apply. The space is also not wheelchair accessible.
What do I need to know when considering a license at the Seafood Market Studios?
o The Seafood Market Studios are a creation and development space. Artists can host small by-invitation receptions, workshop productions, and other small events. Due to fire regulations the maximum capacity for the entire building is fifty (50) people at any given time.
o While drastically altering the structure of the building is not possible, individual studio spaces can be painted and designed to meet the artists’ needs.
o Respect your neighbours - both inside the building and other residents of the neighbourhood! We are guests of the community.
o There will be no operational, technical, or administrative support for your project beyond normal responsibilities of project management within this space.
o A freight elevator is available on a supervised basis by the permission of the Building Manager.
o The studio spaces occupy a portion of the building. Access to remaining areas of the building is strictly prohibited.
Where is it located?

10 new spaces! Gr8!
We need 1000+ ... how do we pick up the pace?
Who is driving Art Policy in Calgary?
I'd like to know the budget of this project & then compare it to something Erik Olsen has done.
Where are the incentives for local developers & building owners to open their spaces up to cultural & community building groups?
There is none.
Calgary needs an Art Policy group that is willing to become political about the arts.
