Music Lives in City Hall!

Artists Anne Loree and Tom Phillips will perform live this March at a new Calgary music venue - Council Chambers at City Hall.

A motion put forward by Alderman Joe Ceci to have live music performed at two Council meetings in March received unanimous support from City Council on February 25. These performances are part of the March Music Series presented by Calgary. Music Lives Here, an initiative created by the Calgary Host Committee for the 2008 JUNO Awards™, to raise awareness and generate excitement about Calgary's growing music scene. To recognize this effort, Mayor Bronconnier recently proclaimed March as "CALGARY MUSIC LIVES HERE” month.

"With Calgary hosting the Juno Awards, I think it's important to promote the local music scene." says Alderman Joe Ceci. "Bringing music to Council Chambers is just one way to showcase musicians and instill civic pride for our local talent."

Songwriter and performer Anne Loree will play on Monday, March 10 and country music artist Tom Phillips will play on Monday, March 17. Each artist will perform two songs as well as the national anthem starting at 9:30 am at Council Chambers, to be followed by regular Council proceedings. Members of the public and the media are invited and encouraged to attend and show their support for live music in Calgary.

Council Chambers is located on the main floor of the Calgary Municipal Building, 800 MacLeod Trail SE.

ARTIST BACKGROUNDERS

Anne Loree
Anne Loree's song "Insensitive" was a breakthrough hit for Jann Arden, bringing her to the forefront of Canadian songwriting and earning her a Juno nomination. Since then Anne has released four CDs (Beyond Cinderella, Roar, Mullet Years and Leaving Shadowland), performed several times at the EPCOR Engineered Air Songwriter's series in Calgary, the 2004 Alberta Sessions at the Calgary and Winnipeg Folk Festivals and various workshops and songwriter showcases sponsored by SOCAN across Canada.

Anne's second CD, Roar, is a broad cross-section of 15 beautiful songs consisting of brave and insightful ballads and rockin' environmental and politically charged commentaries. Songs from Roar, such as "Money at Stake" and "Like a Hole in the Ozone" are still being played extensively on CBC (Richardson's Roundup), CKUA in Alberta, American and Canadian college radio and have charted on special programming. Anne herself was recently featured on Shelagh Rogers "Sounds Like Canada" on CBC AM for a piece she did on the Alberta Drought. Anne interviewed farmers in the northeast province and wrote a heartfelt song called "Diamonds on the Wasteland."

Whether in small clubs across Canada, or at festivals and showcases, Anne has a natural flare for connecting with her audience. Her live performances are always warm, witty and fun. She does a wonderful solo performance and often has talented musicians to back her up. Going back and forth on piano and guitar she delivers a unique and evocative sound through stylized vocals, smart arrangements and powerful lyrics. Anne also delivers her haunting rendition of "Insensitive," just the way she wrote it. Anne released her third and forth albums in November '05.

Tom Phillips
Tom Phillips was born in Calgary and raised in Bragg Creek and Calgary, Alberta, and started writing songs at the age of 12. The songs stemmed from his love of the written word and his passion for music. He studied French horn at University while making his living playing guitar and singing in bars as a solo performer and in a series of duos and groups.

After finishing University, Tom moved to Toronto where he worked as a solo performer. Moving back to Calgary, Tom recorded 4 albums; "Self Titled" (2000), "The Essential" (2002), "King of the Broken Heart" (2004) and "Downtown Cowboy" (2008, with his popular band "Tom Phillips & The Men of Constant Sorrow", one of the busiest bands performing in Calgary. He also released one acoustic album titled "High Flyer" (2003) and the first of its kind "Spanish Fly" (2007), the soundtrack to the novel by Will Ferguson. Tom has also appeared on numerous compilation CDs over the years including the 2006 release "Sorrow Bound," a tribute to Hank Williams. Celebrated blues artist Eric Bibb recorded one of Tom's most requested songs "Ribbons & Bows" and it appears on Eric's release "Friends".

In 2005, Tom starred in a completely sold out run of the Maynard Collins play "Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave" presented at the Ironwood Stage & Grill in Calgary.

Tom Phillips continues to perform solo and with his band on a regular basis as well as write and record his songs. He has truly become one of Alberta's most popular and sought after Country artists.
