Matt Masters 30 Day Challenge

Matt Masters, local country western singer-songwriter is a man on a mission. He's playing 30 (well, actually 32) gigs in 30 days, and asking local musicians to take up the challenge and play as many gigs as possible during the month of March. How can any self-respecting music fan sit on the couch at home through all that? Read on for details about Matt and the Challenge, his fellow challengers, and the Ultimate Live Music Fan Contest.




Music Industry Workshops

The Calgary. Music Lives Here initiative presents five workshops during the March Music Series, all designed to support Calgary's growing music community. The lectures take place every Wednesday evening in March starting Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the Cantos Music Museum. Click here for more information on the workshops.

Big Rock Untapped Stage at the Calgary International Airport

From March 3 through April 6, the Calgary International Airport will come alive with the sounds of local music! The Big Rock Untapped Stage at the Calgary International Airport is a Calgary. Music Lives Here. initiative created to spotlight Calgary musicians to an international audience. Music Lives in City Hall!

Artists Anne Loree and Tom Phillips will perform live this March at a new Calgary music venue - Council Chambers at City Hall. Click here for more information.

Lunch-hour concerts at the Calgary Public Library

The Calgary Public Library - W.R. Castell Central Library is hosting lunch-hour concerts throughout the month of March. Concerts are free and open to the public. Click here for more information.

Olympic Plaza Weekend Kick-off Concert

Thursday, April 3, 2008
Starts at 5 p.m. downtown at Olympic Plaza
Calgary will serve up a stellar opening act for the 2008 JUNO Awards™, with a free outdoor concert featuring top Canadian acts Finger Eleven, Sloan, Bedouin Soundclash, The New Odds and The Dudes downtown at Olympic Plaza on Thursday, April 3, 2008. The show kicks off at 5 p.m. and will run until 11 p.m. This is a free outdoor concert, and all Calgarians and visitors are invited to take part in this special host city celebration to welcome the 2008 JUNO Awards™ to town. Alberta Country Music Salute

7:30 p.m. at the Jubilee Auditorium
A star-studde country music event will honour the success of Alberta artists and celebrate the province's rich music traditions when country music artists George Canyon, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Gord Bamford, Aaron Lines, Tracy Millar, and Trevor Panczak perform on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. This event, titled the Alberta country Music Salute, is part of the Calgary. Music Lives Here. host city celebrations for the 2008 JUNO Awards™, which take place in Calgary April 3 to 6, 2008. 2008 Juno Cup

Friday, April 4 @ 7:30 p.m.

It's hockey night in Calgary as the game's legends and celebrity musicians face off at centre ice for the 5th Annual Juno Cup game. As part of Juno Awards Weekend Events, the Juno Cup presented by The Keg Steakhouse & Bar is a fan favourite that pairs an all-star line-up of NHL Greats against celebrity Rockers for a fundraiser to benefit MusiCan, the charitable arm of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). Juno Cup will take place at The Stampede Corral, Stampede Park, on Friday, April 4th at 7:30 p.m. (MST) in Calgary, AB.

2008 Aboriginal JunoFest Music Celebration

8 p.m. at The Grand (608 1 St SW)

Aboriginal artists from across Canada will be gathering at the Grand Theatre for a vibrant evening of traditional and contemporary performance and music on Friday, April 4 that airms to bring audiences closer to an often overlooked art form. The celebration features Donny Parenteau, Derek Miller, Fara Palmer, Sandy Scofield, Shane Yellowbird and many more.

2008 Francaphone JunoFest Music Celebration

Friday, April 4, 2008
8:30 p.m., Liberty Lounge - Mount Royal College (4825 Mount Royal Gate SW)

Two artists nominated for 2008 JUNO Awards™ for Francophone Album of the year will share the stage at a special event taking place Friday, April 4 at Liberty Lounge at Mount Royal College. Join Damien Robataille and Jorane for a night of great music.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, available online at www.kerfmusic.com or from Library Monette, La Cite des Rocheuses, Megatunes and Laurier Lounge. Parking is $3. Up to 20 JunoFest wristband holders will be admitted at entrance.

2008 JunoFest


Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5

JunoFest will feature a multitude of acts including indie artists, hometown favourites and JUNO Award nominees across-the-board performing at various venues in downtown Calgary.

“There’s nothing like the live experience of seeing your favourite band light up the stage, and with scores of artists participating, there’s a good chance of discovering new favourites along the way during JunoFest,” said Melanie Berry, CARAS President.

JunoFest wristbands are $30 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, online by clicking here or by calling 403-777-0000. Patrons must be 18 years of age and older to attend. JunoFest wristbands offer priority entry and are subject to capacity.

2008 Juno FanFare

Saturday, April 5, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Doors open at 9 a.m., first come, first serve)

MuchMusic VJs Leah Miller and Matte Babel will host the FREE event happening from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (MST) at The Olympic Oval (University of Calgary) on Saturday, April 5th, 2008. Presented by SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Juno FanFare will feature artist interviews, prize giveaways and autograph sessions with Aaron Lines, Bedouin Sundclash, Belly, Faber Drive, Finger Eleven, Gord Bamford, Hedley, IllScarlet, Jeremy Fisher, Jill Barber, Joel Plaskett, Johnny Reid, Jully Black, Marianas Trench, Serena Ryder, Shane Yellowbird, State of Shock and Theory of a Deadman

Juno FanFare is a free event. Entry is subject to capacity and will be granted on a first-come basis. Doors to The Olympic Oval will open at 9 a.m. sharp on Saturday, April 5th. The Olympic Oval is located at 2500 University Drive, NW, on the University of Calgary campus.

Overture to Juno

The JUNO Awards celebrate the best of all music in Canada and now, for the first time, the classical music nominees are featured in a star-studded JunoFest concert presented by Honens CBC Radio 2 at The GRAND on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 2 pm. 2008 Songwriters' Circle


Sunday, April 6, 12 p.m.

Songwriters’ Circle will be held at EPCOR CENTRE’s Jack Singer Concert Hall (205 8th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, April 6th happening from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. (MST).

The intimate afternoon concert will be hosted by one of today’s most exciting songwriters, Joel Plaskett, the front man of Joel Plaskett Emergency and
2008 JUNO Award nominee for Songwriter of the Year. Plaskett will join fellow esteemed Canadian songwriters and JUNO Award nominees AlexCuba, Jeremy Fisher, Serena Ryder, Tegan Quin (of Tegan and Sara), Corb Lund and Bedouin Soundclash's Jay Malinowski.

The writers will share with fans some of their unique creative processes, challenges and songwriting successes, all the while telling personal anecdotes behind their favourite songs. More artists will be announced to join Songwriters’ Circle in the coming weeks.

This year’s CBC broadcast will be hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, host of Q, CBC Radio One’s daily dose of arts, culture and entertainment. Although he is best known as a national on-air personality, Ghomeshi is also a musician, singer and songwriter at heart.

Calgarians and visitors are invited to kick-off Juno Awards Weekend at Olympic Plaza on Thursday, April 3. A free outdoor concert, featuring Canadian acts Finger Eleven, Sloan, Bedouin Soundclash, The New Odds and The Dudes, will begin at 5 p.m. and run until approximately 11 p.m. – providing an opportunity for everyone to get in the JUNO spirit.

Calgary's Host City celebrations for the 2008 JUNO Awards™ are gearing up. “Calgary. Music Lives Here” will serve as the host city theme building up to and throughout the Juno celebrations. The Matt Masters 30 Day Challenge will wrap up with a celebration and finale performance tonight from Matt Masters and the Gentlemen of the Rodeo, along with special guests, at the No.1 Royal Canadian Legion, in Calgary.

Local country and western singer-songwriter Matt Masters initiated the challenge of playing 30 gigs in 30 days during the month of March to celebrate local music in the lead up to the 2008 JUNO Awards™. Along the way, over 100 artists and bands took part, performing hundreds of shows throughout the month.
