Morpheus Theater: Grand Emotions Workshop with Alice Nelson

GRAND EMOTIONS Workshop with Alice Nelson

Sunday, February 19, 10:00 - 4:45

SYNOPSIS:
“Melodrama is the naturalism of our dreams” – Eric Bently

In melodrama all the grand emotions come into play: good and evil, morality with innocence, sacrifice, treason, etc. The goal being to provoke real empathy from the audience. This can only be achieved if the characters believe in absolute values, and with such conviction that they are ready to sacrifice themselves. Melodrama is not outdated, it is of today and is all around us, in the man waiting for the telephone to ring to hear if he has a job, in the war-torn family, in the migrant worker etc.

Melodramatic situations demand a heightened physical and emotional response and expression within the given situation. Students will explore minimum to maximum exercises in grand emotions, truth in size through gestural work and melodramatic contemporary scene work.

Be brave and step into the light of grand emotions.

Jump - Fly - Connect - PROJECT: A Performance Research & Creation Workshop

This research to presentation class is for all creative spirits.

Are you an actor or a dancer? Are you a singer or an athlete? Most importantly, do you like to play?

If so, this class is for you. Through “playtime” research we will locate an individual’s authentic movement. We will take time to examine the emotions present while in this state of play and will develop work from this point. Movement discovery has the ability to trigger new creative output from the core self and feed our methods of creative process.

Here comes the fun part... Within these three hours we will use these methods to create a body of work which will be performed to an invited public at the closing of the workshop! You will have the chance to discover your own point of expression via movement and create as both an individual and within a group. Invite your friends to participate in the flesh! It is your chance to make new self discoveries through movement, to be vulnerable in front of peers and strangers, and to share these experiences to an invited audience of friends - old and new! It will be intense, it will be fun....it will be for you!

Basic etching experience is recommended but not necessary for this course.

In this dynamic and experimental class we will be using collage and beginner silkscreen techniques to create one of a kind prints or small editions. We will be looking at artists like Jacinthe Loranger and Robert Rauschenberg for inspiration to create our own collages in a fun and laid back environment. Participants in this beginner’s course will be introduced to the method of intaglio printmaking, using an engraved copper plate to print their design. The hands-on workshop content will include: plate preparation, ground application, drawing on the plate, etching the plate, plate wiping techniques, printing the plate and editioning your work. All tools and materials will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring sketches or reference imagery for their desired image.

>> IMPASSE/FLOW: Using printmaking to explore dilemmas and decisions
Dates and Times: Sunday, April 15, 10:30am to 2:30pm
Instructor: Heather Stump
An impasse can refer to a closed passage, a dilemma, or a quandary–a feeling of being “stuck”—the opposite of flow. The aim of this four-hour workshop is to investigate the metaphors of “impasse and flow” as they apply to situations in life in which one feels “frozen” when confronted by a dilemma or difficult decision, until the dilemma is resolved or a decision made and life begins to flow again. Workshop participants will record their explorations by creating one unique print incorporating dry point and mono print techniques.
Registration fees: $75.00/$65.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)

>> LEARNING HOW TO FLY: Using printmaking to explore risk-taking and empowerment
Dates and Times: Sunday, April 22, 10:30am to 2:30pm
Instructor: Heather Stump
The aim of this four-hour workshop is to explore “learning how to fly” as a metaphor for risk-taking and empowerment. Participants will be invited to “define flight” by first discussing the meaning of the phrase in their personal lives and to create a collage. Following this brainstorming and collage making session, participants will be introduced to the technique of mono printing and assisted to create a unique print that “embodies flight”. Participants will have the opportunity to share the prints that they have created, as well as reflect on the ideas and experiences generated during the afternoon of art making.
Registration fees: $75.00/$65.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)

Theatre Encounter Workshop Series: Motivity - Physical Theatre Training

MOTIVITY
a workshop series of Physical Movement
Jan 16 – Feb 27, 2012 (bi-weekly)

Intro
The work is called Motivity, a physical learning approach to performance based in Grotowski and Stanislavski's physical actions, Odin Teatret's physical work, Indian Cho principles, authentic & improvisational movement, impulse work, and image-theatre techniques. Motivity looks at acting and all performance as a journey into the essence of physical action and how it informs the performer in making authentic performance choices.

This intensive training leads actors, dancers and physical performers to investigate their 'physical vocabulary’, rooted in impulse, to understand the body / mind relationship in performance. From here rooted in our sensory experience the performer learns a fundamental foundation of acting and performance skills. An alternative approach to play creation and the rehearsal process is used, which is not based on text. The work is physical, and is an in-depth training of the acting and performance process. For actors, dancers and anyone open to move.

Although no experience is necessary, a physical aptitude to move will be very helpful, as the work is quite thorough.

Details
The charge is $10 for one session and $30 for all 4 sessions. Please note that it will be a professional atmosphere focused on the work.

The intention of the classes is to build from week to week. This is to give continuity and build on previous classes, on the underlying principles of movement. However, note that you may ‘drop-in’ with advanced email warning. As such, you may be part of a series of learnings that were introduced in previous classes, and arrive to a very intensive process.

Dates
Monday nights, Jan 16, 30, Feb 13, 27 (2012). 6-8pm.
Please let us know which date(s) you will be coming. Location is in East Village. Detailed information to follow.
